Maria da Conceição Ruivo

Maria da Conceição Espadinha Ruivo is a Professor Emeritus of the Physics Department of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra, and a writer. She holds a PhD  in Physics from the University of Coimbra and,  in the context of a post-doctoral program  at the University of Regensburg (1984), supported by Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD),  she developed  a new line of  research in  the domain of Theoretical Particle Physics. She has published extensively in this area in international  journals and conference proceedings; she has coordinated international projects, and organized international conferences. Besides her main area of research, she is also interested in History of Science. She created a course on History of Ideas in Physics and was a member of the organizing committee for the musealization of the XVIII century Physics Gabinet, now part of the Museum of Science of the University of Coimbra. She supervised Master and PhD students and organized interdisciplinar  activities.

As a writer, she has published a novel, children’s books, recoils of oral literature and she has co-organized (with Graça Capinha) a book on oral literature (Edições Afrontamento, forthcoming). Her current interests are women in science, literature and painting. Her last book, “A menina que se chamava Janela” (Edições Afrontamento, 2016, ilustrações de  Manuela Bacelar), was included in Plano Nacional de Leitura.  She is a collaborator of the Center for Physics of the University of Coimbra and the Margarida Losa Institute for Comparative Literature of the University of Porto.
