Maria Clara Paulino

Maria Clara Paulino is Professor Emerita of the Department of Fine Arts in the College of Visual and Performing Arts of Winthrop University, USA. Between 2003 and 2019, she taught, researched, and supervised theses in History of Art and Art Criticism, with a focus on themes and artists of the Twentieth Century. Until the year 2003, she had taught in the English and Anglo-American departments of the Universities of Aveiro and Porto, Portugal.

With a B.A in Germanic Philology and a Licenciaturain English Literature from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, she was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to attend the post-graduate program in English Literature at the University of Houston. She later obtained funding from INIC (the Portuguese Research Institute) to do research on Virginia Woolf and Joseph Conrad at the University of Cambridge, where she became a Visiting Scholar.

Later, while she taught at the College of Humanities of the University of Porto, she completed an M.A in Art History and began working on her Ph.D., which she defended at the University of Porto while already teaching in the US. Titled “Olhares de Europeus e Norte-Americanos em Viagem por Portugal. Fontes para Estudos de Arte e Património (ca. 1750-1850)”, the thesis was the source for her book Uma Torre Delicada: Lisboa e arredores em notas de viajantes, published in 2013.
